Sept. 8, 2014 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore linebacker/placekicker Nicolai Bornand has been named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The graduate of Dos Pueblos High School in Santa Barbara, Calif., tied the school record for longest field goal while helping the Rebels down Northern Colorado 13-12 on Saturday. Bornand's 54-yarder in the second quarter matched three previous boots: two by Nick Garritano vs. UNR and vs. San Jose State in 1994; and by Jim Cook at Nebraska in 1986.
Bornand also kicked off six times, resulting in two touchbacks and two others that saw the Bears start their drives at their own 17-yard line. One week earlier, Bornand nailed his first collegiate attempt with a 48-yarder at Arizona. Junior college signee Jonathan Leiva handles the team's extra points and field goal attempts shorter than 42 yards.
Next up, the Rebels host Northern Illinois on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting unlvtickets.com.
