Jan. 14, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV's Devonte Boyd was one of just two wide receivers named to the 2014 Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team on Wednesday.
Boyd, who graduated from Henderson's Basic High School, led the nation in receiving yards among all freshmen during the regular season with 980. His yardage total, which also ranked second in Mountain West Conference history for a freshman, and 65 receptions both set freshman records at UNLV. He broke the Rebels' mark for catches in a game by a freshman with 11 and also tied the program mark for 100-yard games in a season by a freshman with three. Boyd, who scored a touchdown in four different games last fall, caught at least two passes in all 13 games and posted 50 or more yards in 11 of them.
Boyd, who was previously named the 2014 Mountain West Freshman of the Year, is the third UNLV player named FWAA Freshman All-America, joining offensive lineman Matt Murphy (2007) and receiver Ryan Wolfe (2006), the latter of whom went on to become the school's career leader in yards and catches.
Boyd was joined at his position on this year's team by Baylor receiver KD Cannon. A 10-person panel of nationally prominent writers representing each of the FBS conferences selected the team. Both true freshmen (20 players) and redshirt freshmen (10 players) were considered.
