LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team kicked off its 2015 dual-match season with a 6-1 loss at the hands of Pac-12 Conference foe Oregon on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Ducks opened by squeaking out doubles play for a 1-0 lead. The Rebels won on court three as Iren Kotseva and Alexis Garrett downed Lina Akesson and Allie Hueffner, 6-4. Oregon came back to win the top match but UNLV led 5-1 on court two before the Ducks' duo prevailed for the decisive point, 7-5.
Moving to singles, the visitors took all three matches that went to three sets, including at the top of the lineup where Nia Rose nipped Santa Shumilina in a super-tiebreaker, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). UNLV scored its only point of the day when Mercedes Lopez-Valez finished off Hueffner, 6-4, 7-5, on court six.
The Rebels will next be in action a week from today when they travel to take on UC Santa Barbara.
