Sanchez Earns Another National Honor

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - New UNLV football head coach Tony Sanchez has been named the Rawlings National High School Coach of the Year for his work last season at Bishop Gorman, American Football Monthly announced Tuesday.

Sanchez, who just turned 41 on Sunday, was previously named All-USA Coach of the Year by USA TODAY after leading the Gaels to a national championship and undefeated 15-0 season in 2014. In his six seasons leading Bishop Gorman, Sanchez compiled a record of 85-5 while winning six Class 4A state titles.

UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy named Sanchez the 11th head coach in school history on Dec. 11. He will announce his first recruiting class with the Rebels on Feb. 4 as part of national signing day while spring practice for the program starts March 16.

The Rawlings coach of the year awards included five regional high school coaches of the year representing the east, southeast, midwest, southwest, and west. The college coach of the year awards included the FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college levels.
