VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot two rounds of 3-over-par 283 and is in fifth place after the first day at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which was played at Old Overton Golf Club (par 70, 7,228 yards) on Monday.
Host Alabama leads the field by 8 shots at 14-under 546 after an opening-round 2-under 278 and a second-round 12-under 268. No. 2 Auburn is second at 6-under, followed by Florida in third at 5-under, No. 5 Florida State in fourth at 2-under and UNLV rounds out the top five at 6-over. Twelve teams are competing at the JPNI.
Individually, Alabama's Robby Shelton leads the field by five shots at 10-under 130 after rounds of 4-under 66 and 6-under 64. Alabama teammate Tom Lovelady and Florida's Sam Horsfield are both tied for second at 5-under.
UNLV sophomore Shintaro Ban leads all Rebel players and is in a tie for seventh at 2-under 138 after two rounds of 1-under 69. Sophomore John Oda is tied for 12th at even-par 140 after rounds of 1-over 71 and 1-under 69, senior AJ McInerney is tied for 29th at 4-over 144 after rounds of 3-over 73 and 1-over 71, freshman Harry Hall is tied for 35th at 5-over 145 after rounds of 1-over 71 and 4-over 74, and sophomore Ben Davis is tied for 47th at 9-over 149 after rounds of 2-over 72 and 7-over 77.
The tournament has a total of 60 individuals and will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
