LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Coming off a win in its only exhibition game of the season, 94-57 over Whittier on Friday, Nov. 6, the UNLV men's basketball team will open its 2015-16 regular season on Friday, Nov. 13, against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The lid-lifter of UNLV's 58th season of men's basketball will mark the official beginning of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational as it is considered an Opening Game of the tournament. It is one of four MJMI Opening Games that will take place on opening day of the 2015-16 college basketball season.
3,000 headbands will be given away on Friday night courtesy of Southern Nevada Water Authority.
UNLV's next matchup in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be against UCLA on Nov. 23 during the Championship Round at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui. Cal Poly will take on UCLA on Sunday, Nov. 15 in its second Opening Games contest before continuing on to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Regional Games at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colo., on Nov. 21-22.
In the exhibition game win over Whittier, freshman Derrick Jones Jr. scored 20 points on 7 of 10 from the field and freshman Stephen Zimmerman Jr. added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Seniors Ike Nwamu and Jerome Seagears also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Seagears had a game-high seven assists.
Friday's game will have no television coverage, however a live Mountain West Network video stream will be available for free at UNLVRebels.com with Tony Cordasco and Keith Starr calling the action. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM. All internet links along with live stats will be available at UNLVRebels.com.
