CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball (5-7) lost a 5-2 decision to the Maryland Terrapins (9-5) Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic held at Big League Dreams. Maryland scored the contest's first five runs before UNLV finally broke through with a pair in the sixth. The Rebels tried to build upon that momentum in the seventh by getting two aboard, but they were unable to capitalize when the would-be, game-tying run grounded out to end the affair.
Maryland opened up with a quick run when Lindsey Schmeiser, who led off with a walk, scored on a sacrifice fly by Mandy Gardner.
The Terrapins upped its lead to two when Erin Pronobis took an offering from Francesca Foti (1-1) to right.
UMD pushed two more across in the fourth and capped its scoring in the fifth with a solo tally.
UNLV had its opportunities early to score some runs, but left six base runners stranded when innings came to a close. Things turned for the better in the sixth when Merina Ili led off with a seven-pitch walk against Kaitlyn Schmeiser (7-4). Moments after Lexie McKinnon entered to pinch run for Ili, Haslinger smashed Schmeiser's 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field.
Following Haslinger's at-bat, Chrissi Omalza and Fahren Glackin reached on consecutive singles, but saw the inning come to a close on a foul out and a double play.
The Terps made a pitching change in the seventh and had Hannah Dewey enter in relief of Schmeiser. UNLV managed to get runners on first and second with two out before Dewey got Haslinger to ground out to end the game.
Schmeiser picked up the win in six innings of work. She was touched for two runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out four. Dewey earned the save - her first - with a scoreless seventh.
Foti was tagged with the loss after giving up a pair of runs off one hit and one walk in 1.1 innings. Kwyn Cooper and Morgan Ettinger also saw time in the circle, and combined to allow three runs (two earned) off five hits in the final 5.2 frames.
UNLV returns to the diamond Sunday looking to snap its four-game losing skid with a pair of contests against Big West competition. The Rebels open up with a 9:00 am affair against UC Santa Barbara before facing Cal Poly at 2:00 pm.
