Feb. 26, 2015 Alexis Park Resort Classic Tournament Central
Box Score: New Mexico State 1, UNLV 0
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team lost a low-scoring affair to the New Mexico State Aggies (9-7) Thursday in the opening game of the Alexis Park Resort Classic at Eller Media Stadium. The visitors from Las Cruces, N.M., struck early with the contest's only tally in the first inning. Despite only one run being scored the game was not void of numerous scoring opportunities, as the two squads combined to leave 19 runners on base - 14 of which were done so by NMSU.
The Aggies began the game sending seven batters to the plate against Morgan Ettinger (2-4). Emma Adams got things started with a one-out double and quickly came around for the lone tally off a single to the right side by Staci Rodriguez.
Following that RBI hit the Aggies would leave the bases loaded in the first, second and third innings. They also managed to strand five more between the fourth and sixth with three of those in scoring position.
UNLV's best scoring chances occurred in the second, third and fourth. The Rebels left four combined on the base paths with all at either second or third base.
NMSU's Karysta Donisthorpe (6-2) picked up the win in complete-game fashion. Donisthorpe struck out seven against three walks and two hits.
Ettinger was saddled with the loss in only 2.2 innings of work. She gave up one run off of five hits, while walking three and striking out one. She handed the ball off to Kwyn Cooper in the third, and she held the Aggies scoreless in 4.1 innings. Cooper fanned four batters, but walked one.
UNLV returns to action Friday with a 6:00 pm tilt with the DePaul Blue Demons at EMS. There are four other games scheduled prior to the Rebels-Blue Demons bout.
