Wyoming opened up a 29-point halftime edge after shooting 73% in the first half and snapped UNLV's five-game win streak 99-68 on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West women's basketball action at Arena Auditorium. The loss drops the Lady Rebels to 13-14 overall, and to tie for fourth in the MW at 10-6. Wyoming meanwhile improved to 14-12, 9-7 in league play with its fifth win in the last six games.
UNLV could not overcome the Cowgirls hot shooting in the first half, as the Cowgirls hit seven of their first eight three-pointers, and would make 9-of-12 in the first half for 75%. The hot shooting started right from the beginning, with Wyoming making four of its first five including a three-pointer and a four-point play to open an 11-3 edge less than four minutes into the game. The Lady Rebels would score seven of the next nine points to close within 13-10, and were down by six, 21-15 on a three-pointer from Brooke Johnson with 11:18 left in the half.
Wyoming took control with a 24-5 run over the next 6:10 of the game. Three straight three-pointers keyed the run, and the Cowgirls made 9 of 10 from the floor during that run, opening up a 45-20 edge on a layup with 4:55 to play. The lead grew to as high as 31 before Briana Charles hit a jumper for UNLV to make the score 56-27 going into halftime. it was the largest halftime deficit of the year for UNLV. The Lady Rebels finished the half with eight made field goals to 22 for the Cowgirls. Danielle Miller led the way in the half with 10 points.
The hot shooting continued for Wyoming to begin the second half, as it scored 20 of the first 26 points for its largest lead of the game, 76-33 with 13:31 to go. UNLV would outscore the Cowgirls by 12 the rest of the way, to account for the final 31-point margin. The 99 points by Wyoming is the most ever allowed by UNLV in a Mountain West game, and the most by a Lady Rebel opponent since a 101-73 loss to Arizona on Dec. 22, 2002.
Miller led UNLV in scoring with 15 points, while Aley Rohde added 13. The Lady Rebels shot 37.7% (20-of-53) for the game, was 5-of-14 from three-point range for 35.7% and 23-of-29 at the line for 79.3%. The Lady Rebels were outrebounded by a 34-26 margin, and were outscored 42-22 in the paint.
Kayla Woodward paced the Cowgirls with 23 points. Kaitlyn Mileto added 21 while Marquelle Dent finished with a double-double (20 points, 10 assists). The trio also combined to shoot 9-15 from three-point range. As a team, Wyoming shot 61.7% (37-of-60) for the afternoon, was 11-of-19 for 57.9% from three-point land and made 14-of-16 at the line for 87.5%.
UNLV will play its last road game of the regular season on Tuesday with a 6 pm contest at San Diego State.
