COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (8-9, 2-6 Mountain West) used a four-run fourth inning to claim a 4-3 victory over Air Force (7-9, 4-4 MW) on Saturday at Falcon Field.
A total of three combined hits were recorded in the first three innings by the Rebels and Falcons. UNLV broke out of its hitting slump by plating four runs on five hits in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Joey Armstrong reached after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Erik VanMeetren followed up with a double to left center, putting runners at second and third with no outs.
Morgan Stotts then doubled to center field, driving in Armstrong and VanMeetren, would then score as the next batter,
Dylan Ellis, doubled to left field.
Parker Hokuf kept the hit parade going, as he singled up the middle, driving in Ellis from second.
The Falcons cut the lead to 4-1 after scoring a run in the fifth inning and eventually forced UNLV starting pitcher
Kenny Oakley out of the game in the sixth inning after scoring two more runs.
The Rebels then turned to their bullpen, getting strong work out of both
Brayden Torres and
Zack Hartman (2) to ensure the victory.
Oakley (2-1) collected the win after allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out five while walking only one.
Offensively UNLV was led by
Morgan Stotts, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Dylan Ellis (2-for-3 with an RBI and a run) and
Payton Squier (2-for-5) also had multiple hits for the Rebels.
UNLV and Air Force will meet for the rubber match on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. MT. Slated to start for the Rebels is junior
Bryan Bonnell (1-2, 6.32 ERA) while Air Force's probable starting pitcher is Jacob DeVries (2-2, 3.63 ERA).
