SANTEE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball (14-13) was handed its third straight defeat at the San Diego Classic II Saturday in its 7-0 setback to the New Mexico State Aggies (20-11) at Sportsplex USA. It marked the second loss to NMSU with the first going in the books as a 1-0 decision on Feb. 26.
UNLV got things started by loading the bases after the first out had been recorded. Unfortunately, a pair of strikeouts followed singles by Samantha Juarez and Francesca Foti and a walk issued to Fahren Glackin to end any scoring threat.
NMSU countered in its half of the first with five hits and a walk that helped produce an insurmountable lead. Rachel Rodriguez led off with a triple down the right-field line and scored moments later when Emma Adams singled to left. Following a single to Staci Rodriguez, Francesca Foti (2-2) was able to induce two outs before the Aggies' offense was able to get a two-run single from Malina Padilla to up the score to 3-0. Dallas McBride joined Padilla on the base paths with a double before Tatum Reedy's three-run home run to left.
After four scoreless stanzas, the Aggies plated one in the sixth with an RBI double by Adams.
The Rebels ended the affair with four hits and left a total of eight base runners stranded. Three of those came in the first inning, while two more occurred in the third and fourth innings. One was left behind in the fifth.
The Aggies' Karysta Donisthorpe (11-2) earned the win in a total of 6.2 innings in the circle. Donisthorpe struck out five against three hits and three walks.
Foti was saddled with the loss in only one inning of work. She was touched for six runs off of five hits.
UNLV also used Glackin and Sydney Mundell in the circle. The former walked a pair of batters before the latter went five innings. Mundell surrendered one runs off of six hits. She struck out four and walked one.
The Rebels will close out their stay at the Classic against the #15/13 Baylor Bears at 9:00 am Sunday morning.
