SANTEE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball (14-14) concluded its stay at the San Diego Classic II Sunday with an 8-0, five-inning loss to the #15/13 Baylor Bears at Sportsplex USA. The defeat was the fourth straight for the Rebels, who had entered the week winners of four in a row.
The Bears scored early and often with all eight runs coming in the first three innings of the contest. The visitors from Waco, Texas pushed three across in their first at-bat off a throwing error and two RBI base hits. An RBI double and a sac fly upped the cushion to five runs in the second. An inning later, BU loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch, single and a walk before it got a pair of singles that resulted in three more scores.
UNLV's offense was limited to three hits with each coming against Heather Stearns, who threw the first two stanzas for the Bears. Brooke Seneshen (4-0) was credited with the win in 3.0 innings of relief work. The duo combined to hold the Rebels scoreless with six strikeouts - five by Seneshen - against three walks.
Janine Petmecky (0-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs off of six hits in two innings. Petmecky gave way to Sydney Mundell, and she tossed three frames surrendering one run off of three hits.
The Rebels left six runners stranded in the affair with half of those in scoring position. A pair was left on base in the first, second and fourth innings. Their best scoring opportunity came in the fourth when Chrissi Omalza attempted to score from third following a bunt put in play by Indiana Coxey. Unfortunately, the bunt was fielded cleanly by BU's first baseman Sarah Beth Toben, who tossed to Sydney Christensen at home for the out.
The Rebels open up Mountain West play next week back in Southern California against the San Diego State Aztecs. The three-game series begins Friday, March 20 and runs through Sunday, March 22. Games one and two are scheduled for 6:00 pm, while the finale is slated for noon.
