SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (14-16 overall, 0-2 Mountain West) suffered its second straight four-run loss to the San Diego State Aztecs (19-12, 2-0). The contest turned into a pitcher's duel apart from the home side's portion of the third inning of the Mountain West tussle Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Despite its scoreless outcome, UNLV managed to outhit SDSU, 6-5, and was able to put at least one runner on the base paths in each inning. Unfortunately, the Rebels left nine runners stranded in the affair - three of which were at second base.
Two of the Rebels' six hits came from Emily Haslinger, who was 3-for-3 from the plate in Friday's game. Overall, Haslinger is 5-for-6 (all singles) with one walk thus far in the series.
The Aztecs' Erica Romero (17-9) was able to squash any scoring opportunity the Scarlet & Gray attempted to build. Romero, who walked two, induced three groundouts to end as many innings, while four of her six strikeouts closed out a stanza.
Janine Petmecky (0-4) pitched well in six innings of work, but she was on the wrong side of the decision due to Lorena Bauer's third-inning grand slam. Prior to Bauer's big hit, SDSU was able to get three runners on via a throwing error and a pair of singles.
Petmecky allowed four runs (three earned) off of five hits. She struck out two against one walk.
The three-game conference series concludes Sunday at noon at the SDSU Softball Stadium. Sunday's outing will be streamed live in conjunction with the Mountain West Network. Links to view the video as well as live stats can be found at UNLVRebels.com.
