TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (10-10) dropped Wednesday's doubleheader at the #13/12 Arizona Wildcats (19-3) contested at Hillendbrand Memorial Stadium. The hosts claimed game one 8-3 before they won the second contest 16-6 in five innings of play. The losses snapped the Scarlet & Gray's season-best three-game winning streak.
In game one, Arizona jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in its half of the first when Hallie Wilson took an offering from Morgan Ettinger (4-5) down the right-field line for a home run.
UNLV countered in the third when Garie Blando drilled a two-run homer to deep center to flip the score around at 2-1. Unfortunately, that lead was short lived as the Wildcats scored seven between the third and fourth to push out to a six-run cushion at 8-2.
The Rebels were able to get one run back in the seventh when Francesca Foti laced a homer down the line in left.
Michelle Floyd (8-2) earned the win for the Wildcats in complete-game effort. Floyd was touched for three runs off of two hits. She struck out eight against two.
Ettinger was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned). She gave up five hits, walked three and fanned one. Fahren Glackin and Alex Petrolia combined to toss the remaining four innings with three runs and four hits.
In game two, UNLV struck first when Samantha Juarez scored from second on a fielder's choice by Foti. Juarez had initially reached on a single and moved into scoring position when Merina Ili was hit by a pitch from Trish Parks (8-1).
The Wildcats quickly flipped the momentum in their favor with eight runs in their half of the first. In fact, all of their offense came between the first and third with 16 runs.
UNLV was able to string together five runs between the third and fifth. Blando led off the third with a single and moved over to third off a double down the left-field line by Juarez. Merina Ili and Foti were credited with RBI when one had a ground out and the other a sacrifice bunt, respectively.
The run in the fourth was off a fielder's choice by Chrissi Omalza, while the two fifth-inning tallies were from Halle Rosario and Jamie DePippo.
Kwyn Cooper (5-3) was saddled with the loss in only 0.2 frames of action. Cooper allowed eight runs off of eight hits.
Parks picked up the win in five frames. She allowed six runs (three earned) off of seven hits.
UNLV returns to action Friday when it hosts Iowa State at 1:30 pm in the Rebel Classic. The three-day tournament runs through Sunday and will be played at Eller Media Stadium. Besides UNLV and ISU, four others will come to Las Vegas with participation from California, Eastern Kentucky, Houston and UC Santa Barbara.
