La Jolla, CA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's tennis team played a neutral-site match against No. 37 Oklahoma State on Thursday and nearly came all the way back from a 3-0 deficit to pull off the upset before falling 4-2 at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

The Rebels dropped to 4-4 while the Cowboys improved to 9-3 and took an 8-5 lead in the all-time series between the programs.

OSU, behind the power of the 17th-ranked duo in the nation, easily won the doubles point by taking both completed matches.

Things didn't look any better for UNLV in singles play as the Pokes won the first set on all six courts. In fact, OSU players quickly took a pair of straight-setters on the bottom two courts to forge a 3-0 advantage.

However, senior Denys Pume, who used to play for the Cowboys before transferring to UNLV, rallied to knock off Lucas Gerch 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 at the second position. The squad's other senior, Ace Matias, also came back and upset No. 92 Jakob Sude, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, at the top of the lineup. Jakob Amilon nearly tied the match before falling to No. 113 Arjun Kadhe at the third spot, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. With OSU having clinched it, the match on court four, which UNLV's Alexandr Cozbinov led 4-1 in the deciding set, was halted.

"After a slow start in doubles and singles we battled back and kept it close," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Jakob was battling cramps and barely lost in his third set. This was a great college tennis match and I am very proud of my team even though the guys came up short."

Next up, the Rebels will compete at the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla. The event will run from Thursday through Sunday and features a 128-team bracket.
