BERKELEY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (20-23) closed out its three-game non-conference series against the #20 California Golden Bears (31-9) with a 9-1 loss in five innings at Levine-Fricke Field Sunday. The Rebels struck first - for the second straight contest - with a run in the first inning, but could not build upon it, as the Golden Bears scored nine straight.
Garie Blando got the game started on a good note for the Scarlet & Gray with a solo home run that cleared the outer fence of the stadium. That hit pushed her season-best hitting streak to 13 games.
Unfortunately, that lead was short lived as the home-standing Golden Bears scored four times - three of which were unearned tallies - in their half of the first. They evened the score at 1-all with a sac fly from Cheyenne Cordes and went ahead for good off an RBI single by Danielle Henderson one batter later. Alleah Laxamana capped the offensive with a two-run single.
Cal upped its lead to four runs in the third when Taurie Pogue was credited with an RBI single that plated Henderson, who had reached base with a one-out single, from second.
The Golden Bears brought the game to a close in the fifth with help from a solo homer by Cordes, an RBI single by Mary Lee and a two-run double by Vanessa Alvarez.
Katie Sutherland-Finch (13-5) earned her second win of the series in five innings of work. Sutherland-Finch struck out three and allowed one run off of four hits.
Sydney Mundell (1-1) was saddled with the loss after she surrendered four runs (one earned) off of four hits. Mundell gave way to Kwyn Cooper, who pitched 3.2 innings and gave up five runs and six hits, in the circle to start the second.
UNLV will stay out on the road with a trip to the northern portion of the Silver State to face the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack next weekend (April 17-19). The three-game, Mountain West series has implications towards the overall standings in the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold. First pitch for Friday's affair is scheduled for 4:00 pm, while Saturday and Sunday are slated to begin at 1:00 pm and 12:00 pm, respectively.
