LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team won the doubles point but could not hold off in-state rival Nevada, Reno in a tough 4-3 defeat Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The match was part of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold. The Wolf Pack currently leads the all-encompassing competition by the score of 15-12 and will earn three more points from today's result if the two teams do not meet again at the Mountain West Conference Championships later this month.

The Rebels fell to 7-15 overall and 1-3 in the MW while the Wolf Pack improved to 8-9 and picked up their first league victory in four tries.

UNLV took two of three doubles matches for one team point. Santa Shumilina and Paola Artiga downed Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley, 6-1, at the second spot and Iren Kotseva and Alexis Garrett doubled up Elissa Pavelea and Monika Magusiak, 6-3, on court three to clinch the point.

Is singles, half of the matches went to three sets and UNR took two of them to escape with the team victory. The hosts got their points at No. 4, where Artiga eased by Blaga Delic 6-3, 6-0; and No. 6, where Garrett rallied past Magusiak 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Next up, UNLV will conclude its regular season by hosting Fresno State on Saturday starting with doubles at 10 a.m. The team's three seniors will be honored before the match at the Fertitta Tennis Complex and admission is free of charge.
