Spring Practice Report: Growing Up With The CBs

April 15, 2015

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV football held its second to last spring practice on a wind-chilled Wednesday.

The team's session went about two and half hours before breaking for the night. The Rebels will have one more practice this week before hosting the Spring Showcase on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

GROWING UP WITH THE CORNERBACKS
A familiar face at Rebel Park this spring has been assistant coach J.D. Williams.

Williams, who coached for the Rebels from 2010-12, returns to UNLV and will oversee one of the most inexperienced groups in the cornerbacks.

"We have a very young group," Williams said. "I think the only guys that saw playing time were Torry McTyer and Fred Wilson. I recently looked across the room and a year ago from right now guys were getting ready for their high school prom."

Wilson has played in 37 games coming into his senior year and McTyer has played in 26 games in two seasons. Those two will look to lead a group that includes hungry redshirt freshmen like Dominique Fenstermacher and Tim Hough.

"The kids are eager to learn and are trying to pick up some things," Williams said. "We have some good competition there as Dominique Fenstermacher and Tim Hough are competing for positions. It's still a long an uphill battle and we have a ways to go, but the kids are eager and willing to learn."

With only a few spring practices left, the group will focus on the attention to details and being in the right spot at the right time.

"We need to focus on our overall scheme," Williams said. "They need to get the scheme down so they know it inside and out. This summer we can work on a lot of technique work. We will be a lot better over the summer and through fall. Right now is an introduction to the system and they are learning new techniques.

Williams is up for the challenge to help the corners grow and help the team, but is also excited to be back in Las Vegas.

"It feels good to be home. UNLV is home," Williams said. "My family and I love Las Vegas. It's a great place to live and you can't be the weather."
