LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (15-22, 2-15 Mountain West) was unable to capture a comeback victory on Saturday, falling 10-8 to New Mexico (23-15, 13-7 Mountain West) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Edgar Montes led Rebels, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. He drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth to give UNLV runners at first and second with one out. Morgan Stotts advanced the runners to second and third, but a Payton Squier ground out to first to closed the game.
Erik VanMeetren also finished with multiple hits for the Rebels, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game. Joey Swanner went 2-for-5 with two runs, while Squier and Nick Rodriguez tallied two hits apiece.
UNLV took to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Swanner registered a single to centerfield. He moved to second after VanMeetren was hit by a pitch. Both Swanner and VanMeetren moved up on a wild pitch, and Swanner scored on an A.J. Hernandez sacrifice fly to left field. Montes brought home VanMeetren with a double to left center, and then scored on a Morgan Stotts single.
The Lobos scored three runs of their own in the top half of the second to tie the game.
The Rebels reclaimed the lead in the home half of the inning when VanMeetren brought home Joey Armstrong on a double to left center.
New Mexico took a 7-4 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the third. The Lobos extended their lead with two more runs in the fourth and added one more in the top of the sixth.
UNLV cut the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Rodriguez brought home Squier on a single to right field.
The Rebels tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Swanner started the inning off with a double and then came home on a VanMeetren double. VanMeetren scored following a Montes double, and Montes crossed home plate on a Stotts ground ball to first base.
Ben Wright (0-2) took the loss for UNLV, allowing nine runs on 10 hits. Blaze Bohall, Zak Qualls, Dan Skelly and Zack Hartman all made relief appearances for the Rebels.
The two teams will complete the three-game set at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. Sophomore D.J. Myers (2-2, 4.19 ERA) is probable for Rebels, while Tyler Stevens (2-3, 2.67 ERA) is expected to go for the Lobos.

This season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, fans will enjoy a new and improved concession stand. Smoken Sams catering will be providing entrees that range from barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers to nachos, chicken fingers and fries. A variety of beverages will also be available.
