LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- Freshman Payton Squier hit a walk-off single to centerfield to give UNLV baseball (18-23, 5-15 Mountain West) an 8-7 victory over Air Force (19-22, 10-13 Mountain West) in 10 innings on Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Squier went 2-for-5 with two run runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI in the second game of the day between the Rebels and Falcons. Edgar Montes, Nick Rodriguez and Erik VanMeetren all tallied two hits apiece.
Air Force jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after scoring in the top half of the second, but UNLV took a 2-1 lead in the third inning after Joey Armstrong brought home Rodriguez on a triple to left center. Armstrong scored on the same play, coming home after a throwing error by the left fielder.
The Falcons reclaimed the lead in the top half of the fourth, plating a pair of runs and tacked on two more runs in the top half of the fifth.
The Rebels cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs of their own. Squier was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a Montes single to right field. The duo moved up a base on a double steal, and Squier came on home on an Air Force error that also allowed Montes to advance to third.
Montes later scored on a Dylan Ellis sacrifice fly to left field to bring Air Force's lead to 5-4.
The Falcons added two more runs in the top half of the seventh, but UNLV answered with a three-run home half.
With one out and two Rebels on base, Ellis drew a walk to load the bases. VanMeetren hit a single to centerfield to bring home Armstrong. A.J. Hernandez brought home a run after he was hit by a pitch, and Austin Anderson drove in the Ellis for the tying run.
After a scoreless eighth, ninth and top half of the 10th, UNLV loaded the bases and set the stage for Squier's clutch hit.
Zack Hartman (2-1) earned his second win of the season, pitching three perfect innings with one strikeout. Starter D.J. Myers went five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Ben Wright also made an appearance in relief.
The Rebels will look to complete the three-game sweep of the Falcons at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. Freshman Blaze Bohall (3-2, 3.82 ERA) is expected to start for the Rebels, while Trent Monaghan (4-3, 2.62 ERA) is probable for the Falcons.
REBELS AND FALCONS COMPLETE SUSPENDED OUTING - FINAL STATS
The Rebels and Falcons continued their suspended Friday night game on Saturday and UNLV pulled out a 7-2 victory. The game was suspended in the top half of the eighth with UNLV leading 6-2.
The Rebels added one more run in the bottom half of the eighth after Morgan Stotts brought home Ellis on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Squier finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Armstrong went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Zak Qualls came in relief for UNLV to close out the victory, allowing Kenny Oakley (3-4) to earn his third win of the season.
