Seven Extra-Base Hits Contribute To Rebel Rally

April 3, 2015

Box Score

LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (16-20 overall, 2-6 Mountain West) overcame a four-run deficit in its 14-12, come-from-behind victory over the Utah State Aggies (12-23, 4-4) Friday at Johnson Field. The Aggies jumped out to an early four-run lead after one inning of play and matched the Rebels run for run through three frames until the latter outscored the former 9-3 the remainder of the affair.

Both squads scattered 16 hits with the Scarlet & Gray getting multiple-hit efforts from five of its own. Garie Blando, Emily Haslinger and Samantha Juarez had three hits apiece, while Fahren Glackin and Jamie DePippo had two each. Besides their base knocks, Haslinger paced the team with four RBI to three from Glackin. Blando managed to score a team-best three runs.

Trailing by as much as four runs after three complete innings, UNLV began its comeback with two scores in the fourth. Blando got the rally started with a one-out single before Glackin brought her home with a double. One batter later, Juarez laced a single to left field that was misplayed by USU's Sarah Vasquez and allowed Glackin to score.

The Rebels carried the momentum into the fifth with their second seven-run stanza in as many days. Unlike Thursday's affair, Friday's big inning only featured one home run instead of three. DePippo sparked the outburst with a one-out triple down the right-field line moments before Janine Petmecky hit a single through the left side. USU's Alleyah Armendariz (1-11) then issued a walk to Brooke Stover to put a pair prior to giving up an RBI double to Blando. Petmecky scored on the two-base hit, and her run evened the score at 9-all. Stover proved to be the go-ahead tally when she touched the plate after Armendariz uncorked a wild pitch.

The Aggies went to the bullpen after giving up the lead and brought Jordyn McCracken into the contest. Unfortunately, the new hurler didn't hinder the Rebels whatsoever. UNLV managed to record a pair of singles from Glackin and Juarez before Haslinger crushed a three-run home run to straightaway center field to cap the team's scoring.

After seeing its offense silenced for two innings, USU fought to get back into the game with three runs over the final two innings. Noelle Johnson and Paxton Provost had doubles that resulted in the runs with the former's occurring in the sixth for two scores to the latter's in the seventh for one run.

Sydney Mundell (1-0) picked up her first win as a Rebel in 4.2 innings of relief. Mundell, who struck out two, gave up three runs off of nine hits. She followed Petmecky in the circle after USU produced nine runs (seven earned) off of seven hits.

UNLV started the day with a one-run lead behind a two-out double by Haslinger. That advantage was short lived as USU notched four hits, including a two-run triple by Hailey Froton and a two-run homer by Nicole Arata.

Each side scored three in the second with the Rebels getting RBI from DePippo (double), Blando (single) and Glackin (sac fly). The Aggies, on the other hand, went with the long ball, once again. Froton had a two-run blast and got some help from a fielding error by Glackin in right field.

The Rebels picked up their third-inning tally off a wild pitch only to see the Aggies counter with an RBI single by Froton - who wound up hitting for the cycle.

USU's Armendariz was stuck with the loss in 3.0 innings of work. She was roughed up for seven runs (six earned) off of seven hits. She walked two and struck out two. Paige Mills, who got the start for the Aggies, only lasted 1.1 frames after she allowed four runs off of four hits.

The Rebels and Aggies return to Johnson Field Friday for the rubber match of the MW series. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm MT (11:00 am PT).

The Scarlet & Gray returns to Las Vegas for a midweek series against the Boise State Broncos April 7-8 at Eller Media Stadium.

NOTES: With help from Friday's home run, Haslinger moved into sole possession of ninth place in the program's career record book with 23 dingers.
