RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com)--UNLV baseball (12-16, 2-11 Mountain West) battled back from an 8-1 deficit but eventually fell 10-9 to in-state rival Nevada, Reno (24-6, 10-3 MW) in 12 innings on Thursday night.
The Wolf Pack took control of the momentum by recording the first triple play in Peccole Park history in the top of the first inning. They followed that up by scoring five runs in the home half of the first to take a 5-0 lead.
UNR extended its lead by scoring two more runs in the third inning before the Rebels got on the board in the fourth inning. UNLV's run came after Edgar Montes flied out to center field and Erik VanMeetren scored on the sacrifice. UNR answered by scoring a run of its own in the home half of the inning.
The Rebels' scored three runs in the sixth inning. Andrew Yazdanbakhsh cleared the bases, which were loaded, when he hit a double to left center. The team also plated a run in the seventh inning when Edgar Montes singled to left center, driving in Payton Squier.
UNR scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning before UNLV rattled of four runs to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning. Morgan Stotts singled to right field, driving in Montes. Parker Hokuf was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Joey Armstrong followed that up with a single down the right field line, driving in Stotts and Joey Swanner.
Junior Brayden Torres pitched masterfully for the Rebels in relief, allowing two hits in 3.1 innings, striking out three and walking two. The last hit he allowed ended up being the game-winner as the Wolf Pack's Austin Byler hit a double to right field, driving in a runner from first. Torres (0-2) was saddled with the loss.
Offensively junior Joey Armstrong led UNLV, as he finished 4-for-7 with two RBI. He also collected his eighth outfield assist of the season. Andrew Yazdanbakhsh led the team with three RBI and finished 2-for-4. Six more Rebels finished with multiple hits and as a team they finished with a season-high 19 hits. UNLV has out hit its opponents in four consecutive games.
Head coach Tim Chambers missed the game because of a reoccurring back issue. Chambers, who recently had surgery on his back, flew to Las Vegas Thursday morning.
The Rebels and Wolf Pack will meet for the second game of the three-game series on Friday at 6:00 p.m. PT. UNR will send left-handed pitcher Christian Stolo (2-1, 2.70 ERA) to the mound, while UNLV's starting pitcher has yet to be announced.
