April 8, 2015 Final Stats
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- It took two days, but UNLV baseball (13-18, 2-13 Mountain West) found a way to capture a 7-6 win over No. 5 Arizona State (21-9) on Wednesday morning at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
It was the Rebels first victory over a top-five team since 2003, when they beat No. 3 Cal State Fullerton 8-6. The win also ended a seven-game losing streak this season and was the team's first win over ASU since 2002.
UNLV plated four runs in the final two innings to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Rebels' rally started in the seventh inning when Morgan Stotts singled on a bunt and moved to third on a throwing error by Arizona State, which brought home Erik VanMeetren from second and pinch runner Joey Swanner from first. Stotts scored two batters later when A.J. VanMeetren hit his second double of the game.
In the eighth inning, Nick Rodriguez and Joey Armstrong led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Erik VanMeetren loaded the bases after he was hit by a pitch one batter later. Swanner followed up by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, which drove in Rodriguez from third and wrapped up the Rebels' scoring. That run ended up being the winning run after Arizona State scored a run in the top of the ninth inning.
UNLV limited the Sun Devils to only one run on Wednesday after ASU plated five runs in two and half innings on the originally scheduled Tuesday night. A malfunction to two light banks on the first base side suspended the game because of darkness to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Sun Devils scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but the Rebels answered in the home half of the first when A.J. Hernandez singled to right field to bring home Armstrong.
Arizona State responded by scoring four runs in the top of the second inning. UNLV got a run back in the bottom half after Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home A.J. VanMeetren.
After a scoreless top of the third, UNLV loaded the bases with one out before the game was suspended due to darkness.
The game resumed with an A.J. VanMeetren ground out to first base, which brought home his brother Erik VanMeetren from third to cut the deficit to two runs.
A.J. VanMeetren led the Rebels from the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Joey Armstrong (2-for-4), A.J. Hernandez (2-for-3), Morgan Stotts (2-for-5) and Nick Rodriguez (2-for-4) also finished with multiple hits in the game.
UNLV used a total of eight pitchers over the course of the game and the only pitcher to go more than one inning was Cody Roper. Zack Hartman (1-1) earned the win and Blaze Bohall (1) collected his first career save.
The Rebels will head back on the road this weekend as they will play their final weekend non-conference series against Ohio State. UNLV's next home contest will be against New Mexico April 17-19.
