Ruiz Earns First Career FIFA World Cup Start

June 13, 2015

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Jenny Ruiz, former UNLV Rebel and current member of the Mexico national team, earned her first career FIFA Women's World Cup start on Saturday, as she played the entire contest in Mexico's 2-1 setback to England in Moncton, Canada. It was the second game for both teams in Group F, and the second for both to be played in Moncton Stadium.

Ruiz was officially listed as a midfielder, but spent the majority of the game helping out Mexico's defensive backline. She was part of a defensive effort by Mexico that held England scoreless for the first 70 minutes of the game, until allowing the first score of the game in the 71st minute. England took a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute, but Mexico wouldn't go away easily. The deficit was cut to 2-1 in the first minute of stoppage play (91st minute), and then Ruiz came up with a steal in the 94th minute that led to what would be the last offensive chance for Mexico that came up short.

Mexico is now fourth in Group 4 with one point (0-1-1), while England moved to a tie for second with three (1-1-0). France (1-1-0) is also tied for second, after Columbia (1-0-1) moved to first with four points after its 2-0 upset of France on Saturday. The top two teams in Group F advance to the Round of 16.

Next up for Ruiz and Mexico will be the final game of the group stage, on Wednesday, June 17 against France at 1 pm (PT) in Ottawa. That game will be broadcast by FOX.
