June 27, 2015 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships: Saturday's Results
EUGENE, Ore. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track & field alumna Amanda Bingson (2009-12) finished third overall in the hammer throw at the 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. By virtue of her finish and mark of 231-7 (70.60m), Bingson will represent the United States for the fourth consecutive summer at an international competition alongside Amber Campbell and Deanna Price, who placed first and second, respectively.
Bingson sat atop the leaderboard after her first throw (230-2/70.17m), but dropped as far as fifth after four rounds - she jumped into third place on her fifth attempt (231-7/70.60m). Price, the 2015 NCAA champion, claimed the top spot on her second throw of 237-2 (72.30m). That distance was the would-be winning mark until Campbell's sixth and final attempt. Campbell stepped into the throwing ring and unleashed a winning measurement of 237-5 (72.36m).
Campbell, a mainstay at the USATF Outdoor Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials dating back to the early 2000s, laid claim to her third national title in the hammer after previously doing so in 2010 and 2012. Since 2004, she has been in the top three a total of 11 times.
Bingson, a Las Vegas native and Silverado High School graduate, entered Saturday's competition as the reigning, two-time national champion in the hammer. After she exhausted her collegiate eligibility in 2012, she finished second at the U.S. Olympic Trials and in turn earned a spot on Team USA at the London Olympics. One year later in Des Moines, Iowa, she won the first of two national titles behind successive throws, including one of 248-5 (74.92m), which not only reset the Drake Stadium record, but also placed her name atop the American record book. In 2014, she successfully defended her title in Sacramento, Calif., that -- once again -- shattered a stadium mark.
Two more individuals with ties to the Rebel program competed Saturday. Drea Austin (Las Vegas/Foothills HS) and Lekeisha Lawson ran in their respective 200m races. The former finished seventh in the junior event with a time of 24.11, while the latter was 17th in 23.03.
