July 2, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Longtime college athletics administrator Jim Weaver, who served as director of athletics for UNLV for three years during the 1990s, died Thursday at his home in Blacksburg, Va., at the age 70 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
Weaver retired in 2013 because of health reasons after more than 16 years as AD at Virginia Tech. He also led the Western Michigan athletics department for two years after leaving Las Vegas. However, his first head job came when he was named UNLV's sixth permanent AD on Nov. 20, 1991. He announced his resignation from the school in October 1994.
A graduate of Penn State who played and coached football under the legendary Joe Paterno, Weaver first served as an athletic administrator at the University of Florida.
"We are saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Weaver," said UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy. "I was here with Jim for a short time and then we were colleagues in the Big West Conference while I was at the University of Pacific. He did some really good things during his three years in Las Vegas, including building the Lied Athletic Complex to give our student-athletes and coaches a better experience. He certainly went on to do a lot of impressive things at Virginia Tech. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
