Aug. 20, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV held the first of two practices on Thursday morning at Rebel Park. The Rebels will continue #CampRebel with an evening practice on Thursday night.
POSITION PREVIEW: QUARTERBACKS
Coaches preach about experience in college football and UNLV returns an experienced quarterback to lead the offense this season.
Blake Decker (6-2, 215, SR-1L, Scottsdale CC) not only has a year of playing time under his belt, he is one of the oldest college football players in America and will turn 25 at the end of September. His maturity and experience is what puts him ahead in the quarterback group.
"Blake has saw a lot of defenses last year and a few different looks this spring," quarterbacks coach Ron O'Dell said. "He knows how to make the checks and get in and out of plays, which has really helped so far in camp."
Behind Decker on the depth chart coming into fall camp is Kurt Palandech (6-2, 185, SO-TR, Laney College), Kevin Thomson (6-1, 185, FR-RS, Auburn Riverside HS) and true freshman Dalton Sneed (6-0, 185, FR-HS, Horizon HS) has impressed coaches this fall.
"Kurt is doing a good job," O'Dell said. "He's not seeing quite as much as Blake but he is getting there. He is watching film and getting better every day. Kevin is doing a great job of working hard and Dalton is working in there and is pushing Kevin."
As a whole the group has improved from where they were at the start of spring practices.
"They are making their reads and getting the ball out on time, for the most part," O'Dell said. "They really have a grasp of the offense, which is really good. They are excited to get going with the season."
