LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV defeated Hawai'i 3-1 in a non-conference match on Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. UNLV improves to 4-4-0 while Hawai'i drops to 2-5-1.
Dakota Blazak got the Rebels on the board first in the ninth minute. After dribbling through the midfield and past a defender, Blazak put the ball past the goalkeeper in the right side of the net right in front of the box. Both team traded chances afterwards, and Hawai'i was able to capitalize in the 40th minute. Sarah Lau crossed the ball into the box to TJ Reyno, and Reyno blasted the ball into the upper right corner of the net.
UNLV possessed the ball mostly in Hawai'i's side of the field early on in the second half, and it paid off in the 53rd minute when Susie Bernal scored the game-winning goal, her third of the season. Bernal took the ball down the right sideline and made some nifty moves to get past two defenders and in the right side of the box kicked the ball into the net. Jordan Magnin and Jodi Barber assisted on the play. Barber added an unassisted insurance goal in the 71st minute. Off a free kick that the goalie made a save on, Barber gathered the loose ball and scored a few feet away from the net.
Jordan Sallee made two saves to improve her record to 4-4. The Rebels led the shot category 19-15, including a 10-3 advantage in the first half. Seven different Rebels had two shots in the game.
UNLV wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule at home on Sunday against UTRGV at 5:00 p.m.
