LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV has a doubles teams alive in the main draw after the first day of the 14th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebel duo of Aiwen Zhu and Carol Yang downed Rebecca Smaller and Christina Makarova of Duke, 6-1, to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals where they will face Florida's Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter.

Yang also won her first round of singles, 6-1, 6-1, over UCLA's Kristin Wiley, before falling later in the day to Florida's 51st-ranked Brianna Morgan, 6-2, 6-2.

Playing in Flight Two, Mercedes Lopez won her match, 6-4, 6-0, over Elizabeth Yao of Stanford while Paola Artiga will continue play in the consolation bracket of the top flight.

Individual competitors from six teams ranked in the national top 16 have joined UNLV for this elite event. Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
