Albuquerque, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV had a successful second round of action on Thursday at the 2016 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, which is being played at New Mexico's McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium and the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.

In round of 64 singles competition five Rebel netters won and will be advancing. Paola Artiga, seeded 17-32, won her match against Tessa VanDer Ploeg of Wyoming 6-1, 6-3, No. 1 seed and No. 103-ranked Carol Yang beat Lucy Octave of Utah State 6-1, 6-0, Aiwen Zhu downed Nancy Menjivar of Boise State 6-2, 6-4, Anna Bogoslavets outmatched Chloe Hule of Colorado 7-5, 6-0, and Jovana Kenic got past Claire Koke of Denver 7-5, 7-5.

Four UNLV players also advanced in round 32 of singles. Yang beat Savannah Ware of BYU 6-2, 6-3, Zhu beat Lou Ronaldson of Colorado 6-1, 6-0, Artiga won against the No. 3 seed and No. 125-ranked Andrea Leblanc of the host team New Mexico 7-6, 6-3, and Bogoslavets just got past Hanneke Lodewijks of Northern Arizona 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

In round of 32 doubles on Thursday, UNLV duo Yang and Zhu defeated Elisa Koonik and VanDerPloeg of Wyoming 8-5 and will be advancing on.

Members from 16 western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday each day in both singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2016 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.

Action resumes Friday at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.
