Nov. 9, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's basketball team has signed Kavionnia Brown and Krista Jackman to national letters of intent to play for the Lady Rebels starting in the fall of 2017-18, Head Coach Kathy Olivier announced on Tuesday.
"Krista has great size, she's long, a legit 6-5, keeps the ball high and is overly excited to be a Lady Rebel," said Olivier. "And I think I can say that for both of them, Krista and Kavi. Kavi's a quick explosive point guard that can fly down the court and get the ball to the right people at the right time. She's very savvy and has a high basketball IQ."
Brown, a 5-5 point guard from Albuquerque, N.M., is a two-time All-District selection who helped Cibola High School to a state championship and a runner-up finish in her two years with the two-time district champion Cougars. As a junior, Brown also earned second team all-state and all-metro honors while averaging 8.0 points, 4.2 assists and 3.1 steals per contest. Her freshman season, she earned all-district honors while playing for the state champion Volcano Vista High School squad. Brown was named all-academic first team the past two seasons as well. She was also a member of the New Mexico Heat AAU club team.
"Cibola High is so proud of Kavi," said Lori Mabrey, Cibola High Head Coach. "Her hard work has paid off and we couldn't be more thrilled to see this little Dynamo be spectacularly fast in college!"
"Kavi will be the fastest player in the Mountain West the first time she sets foot on the campus of the Lady Rebs," said New Mexico Heat coach Robert Sanchez. "Her ability to get into space with the ball will stir the fans, but her ability to defend will win their hearts. A thrill to watch!"
Jackman meanwhile is a 6-5 center from Mohave Valley, Ariz., and as a junior was named Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV, Section III Player of the Year after leading the River Valley High to a sectional championship and the second round of the state playoffs. She also received first-team all-section and honorable mention all-state honors in 2015-16 and played AAU ball with the Tri State Gym Rats club team.
"I'm so proud of Krista," said River Valley High head coach Larry Moore. "I've seen her grow over four years and think she'll be a tremendous player for UNLV"
"Krista is an outstanding young lady who has worked very hard at achieving this goal," said Molly Tuter, Tri State Gym Rats head coach. "She will be a great asset to UNLV women's basketball in the years to come"
UNLV opens the 2016-17 regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 against Concordia at 4 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center.
