Dec. 3, 2016 WAILUKU, Hawaii (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV jumped out to a big first quarter lead for the second straight game, but this time answered back after giving up its advantage in the third quarter, shutting down the Idaho offense in the fourth to claim a 73-61 victory over the Vandals on day two of the Maui Jim Maui Classic women's basketball tournament from War Memorial Gymnasium. The Lady Rebels improved to 6-1 on the year with the victory, and all six wins have been by double-digits, while the Vandals dropped to 2-5 overall.
UNLV jumped out to a 13-4 edge, fueled in part by a trio of three-pointers, and the Lady Rebels would take a 22-11 edge after the first quarter after a Jordyn Bell layup at the buzzer. Idaho would get back in the game by knocking down six treys in the second quarter, and tied the game before Paris Strawther converted a short jumper in the final 20 seconds to give UNLV a 35-33 halftime lead.
Idaho, made five of its first six attempts from behind the arc in the third quarter, using a 16-8 run to open up a 49-45 edge over the Lady Rebels. UNLV didn't panic however, and slowly climbed back into the game thanks to its advantage on the boards. Back-to-back three-pointers from Brooke Johnson and Tiara Tucker gave UNLV a 53-51 edge, and it would lead 54-53 going into the final 10 minutes.
UNLV then clamped down on the Idaho long range game in the fourth quarter, holding the Vandals to just five points over the first eight minutes while opening up a 66-58 lead on the way to the 12-point victory.
Dakota Gonzalez led UNLV with 20 points while Johnson added 18, both season-highs for the two Lady Rebels. Strawther also posted double-figures with 13. Unofficially, UNLV shot 42.2% from the floor, 40% from three-point range and 57.9% at the line. The Lady Rebels were also credited with a 48-27 edge on the boards, but those numbers are unofficial and are expected to change.
Idaho took 52 shots on the night, but just nine from inside the three-point line as they were 16-of-43 from behind the arc.
