Road Setback For Lady Rebels At Conference Leaders

Feb. 13, 2016

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) -

Colorado State made seven of its first 11 three-pointers to open an 18-point halftime lead and UNLV came no closer then 16 the rest of the way on the way to an 83-52 loss at the conference leaders on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West women's basketball action from Moby Arena. UNLV dropped to 12-11, 6-7 in league play, while the Rams have tied their school record for longest win streak at 19, and improved to 22-1, 12-0 in the MW.

After Dakota Gonzalez drained a jumper to make the score 7-6, Keyora Wharry scored the next eight points of the game to spark a 12-2 run for the Rams. A three-pointer capped the run to put CSU up 19-8. UNLV answered with an Aley Rohde layup, but would go into the second quarter trailing 24-12, after the Rams shot 3-of-4 from three-point and 62.5% from the floor.

A 7-0 run midway through the second quarter extended the lead to 19 for CSU, and it was an 42-24 score going into the break. UNLV's best quarter was by far the third, as it held CSU to just 31% from the floor and played the Rams even for the most part during the third 10 minutes. However, another trey from CSU, with 10 seconds to go, put the lead to 58-37 at the end of three.

UNLV scored the first five points of the fourth, and closed within 58-42 on a three-point shot in the corner by Amie Callaway. CSU slowly started to extend the lead, going up 74-50 with 3:05 to play. Following a pair of free throws, CSU ended the game on a 9-0 run to account for the 31-point margin.

Gonzalez led UNLV with 14 points, while Brooke Johnson added 13. Nikki Wheatley was limited by foul trouble, and finished with seven points in just 19 minutes of action. UNLV shot 32.8% (19-of-58) for the game, and struggled from long distance, hitting 3-of-22 for 13.6%. UNLV did hold a slight edge on the boards, 37-36, but turned the ball over 11 times while only forcing four by the Rams.

Four players finished double-figures for CSU, with Jamie Patrick scoring 19 and Elin Gustavsson 17 points after combining to shoot 9-of-13 from three-point range. As a team, CSU shot 33-of-67 (49.3%), and 12-of-21 from behind the arc for 57.1%.

UNLV will be back in Las Vegas for its next game on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 pm against Air Force in the Cox Pavilion. It will be the Lady Rebels' Play4Kay game, the annual game to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness, and all fans wearing pink to the contest will receive half-price admission.
