LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team captured both the team and individual titles on Tuesday at the LMU Invitational, which was played at Lake Las Vegas' Reflection Bay Golf Club (par 72, 7,556 yards).
The Rebels finished 28 shots better than second-place finisher Saint Mary's. UNLV carded a 30-under-par 834 for the 54-hole tournament after a final-round 5-under 283. The Gaels finished the event at 2-under. UC Santa Barbara finished third at 5-over, Cal Poly was fourth at 13-over and San Francisco rounded out the top five at 24-over. There were a total of 14 teams competing.
UNLV senior AJ McInerney earned medalist honors at 8-under 208 after a final-round even-par 72, while sophomore John Oda finished one shot back in second place at 7-under after a final-round 1-under 71. Cal Poly's Justin De Los Santos and UCSB's Brandon Bauman both tied for third at 4-under.
Two other Rebels finished in the top five as senior Zane Thomas and freshman Harry Hall both tied for fifth at 3-under. Thomas was 1-under during the final round, while Hall was 3-under. Sophomore Shintaro Ban finished tied for eighth at 1-under after a final-round 7-over.
The team title was UNLV's first of the season and McInerney's individual crown was the first of his career.
Competing as individuals for UNLV: sophomore Ben Davis tied for 13th at 2-over after a final-round 1-over, junior Redford Bobbitt tied for 23rd at 6-over after a final-round 6-over and junior Taylor Montgomery tied for 49th at 14-over after a final-round 10-over. There were a total of 80 players competing.
UNLV will be back in action Feb. 17-19 at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii.
