LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball (12-10) toppled Santa Clara (5-15) 20-1 on Friday night in the Rebel Classic at Eller Media Stadium in five innings to tie the school record for runs scored in a game with 20. The previous time the Rebels scored 20 runs was on May, 2 1981 against Redlands.
The Rebels poured in the runs in the fourth inning to shorten the game, knocking in 14 runs off 10 hits. UNLV loaded the bases with one out after Janine Petmecky was hit by a pitch and Alyssa Cordova and Kwyn Cooper drew walks. Francesca Foti brought home Cordova and Petmecky with a two-RBI single to left field. Myranda Bueno doubled to left center to score Foti and Cooper. Pinch-hitting for Brooke Stover, Emily Haslinger singled to left field to knock in Bueno. After a walk was drawn by Chrissi Omalza, Garie Blando hit an infield single to load up the bases. DePippo doubled down the left field line to score two baserunners. Petmecky then singled and went to second on a fielding error in centerfield to hit in DePippo and Blando. A pinch-hitting Madison Rogers singled to the shortstop, and Kylie Rasmussen reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that allowed Petmecky to jog in home. Foti then doubled down the left field line to score Rasmussen and Rogers. After a wild pitch moved Foti to third base, Bueno singled down the left field line but was tagged out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double. Haslinger capped off the big inning with a solo home run to left field for her third homer of 2016 and 30th of her career.
Santa Clara was able to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after scoring off an error, but the Rebels tied it up in their first time up at the plate. Blando led off with a single to left field, and DePippo singled through the left side afterwards. After the bases became loaded from a throwing error, Blando was able to score on a wild pitch.
UNLV took the lead in the second inning. Bueno doubled to right field to lead off the inning and scored on throwing error from a sacrifice bunt by Jadelyn Yadao-Valdez.
The Rebels increased their lead to five runs in the next inning. Cordova led off the inning with a double down the left field line, advanced to third base off a sacrifice bunt by Cooper and scored on a wild pitch. After Foti walked, Bueno doubled to left center to knock in Foti and went to third off an errant throw to the home plate. Stover collected her first hit and RBI of the season with a double to left field to knock in Bueno. Pinch-running for Stover, Jamie Hatch advanced to third base on a wild pitch before Blando drew a walk. Hatch then stole home after Blando got involved in a throw down that allowed her to run home safely.
Bueno tied the school record for most doubles in a game with three, joining Jaci Hull (Mar. 24, 2007 versus Sacramento State) as the only Rebels to do so. She also collected a single, three runs and four RBIs.
UNLV had nine different batters register a hit, including five that had at least two. Foti racked up four RBIs in the game and had two hits, one walk and three runs. DePippo finished the game 3-3 with two RBIs, a walk and one run. Blando went 2-2 with two walks and two runs. Haslinger had two hits in two-at bats, all in the fourth inning, with two runs and two RBIs.
Cooper (5-4) pitched her third complete game of the season to pick up the win. She allowed only two hits, one unearned run and no walks with a season-high five strikeouts.
