March 17, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former Rebel safety Peni Vea (pronounced "VAY-ah") ran the fastest 40-yard dash (a sizzling 4.40) and recorded the best standing broad jump number (a stunning 41.5 inches) at Thursday's annual UNLV Pro Timing Day on campus.
Taking part in all or some of the timed or measured events at Rebel Park were 10 Rebels who just completed their college careers: Vea, DB Fred Wilson, QB Blake Decker, WR Anthony Williams, LB/DL Najee Johnson, TE Jake Phillips, WR Aaron Criswell, DL Sonny Sanitoa, OL Nick Gstrein and LB Kimble Jensen. Two more Rebels from years past (WR Maika Mataele and RB Bradley Randle) were back on campus to take part as well.
Organized by UNLV Director of Football Strength and Conditioning Keith Belton, the day also included the bench press, the broad jump and three-cone drill.
By comparison, Vea's broad jump would be more than an inch better than any safety attending this year's NFL Combine, his 40-time would rank second and his bench press (19 reps of 225 pounds) would tie for second at the position.
Vea, who started all four years in the UNLV secondary after coming to campus out of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, finished ranked third in school history with 328 total tackles
"It felt good to be back out here running around, " said Vea who started the last 20 of his 43 career starts for the Scarlet & Gray. "I have been training hard and feel blessed to get the numbers today."
The 2016 NFL Draft will take place April 28-30 in Chicago.
