June 1, 2016 CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's golfer Alexandra Kaui won the U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifier on the Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills Golf Club, near Los Angeles, on Tuesday, turning in a 3-under-par 171 to earn a spot in the 2016 U.S. Women's Open Championship.
The event in the City of Industry, Calif. was a two-round qualifier for the U.S. Women's Open Championship, which will be held at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif., July 7-10. Fox Sports 1 will provide coverage of the tournament for the first two rounds from July 7-8, and Fox will televise the final two rounds on July 8 and 9.
Kaui will compete in the U.S. Women's Open Championship for the second time. She won the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Glendale, Ariz., by five strokes in 2013 and was one of a few teenagers to compete in the championship that year.
Considered the world's premier women's golf championship, the U.S. Women's Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA. The championship was first conducted in 1946 and its winners include players such as Betsy Rawls, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Mickey Wright, Hollis Stacy, Annika Sorenstam, Se Ri Pak, Juli Inkster, Inbee Park and Michelle Wie.
Completing her first year as a Rebel after transferring from Oklahoma, the Las Vegas native won the Mountain West Championship at 4-under 212 (72-71-69). She won by five strokes for the largest individual winning margin in MW Championship history, topping the previous record of four that was shared by former UNLV golfer Therese Koelbaek. She finished the year with a 73.61 scoring average and 1.78 score vs. par. Her four best finishes came in the last six tournaments, including a tie for fourth place at Bison at Boulder Creek II, fifth place in the DAC/SMU Invitational and tie for ninth place at the NCAA Stanford Regional.
