UNLV Names Sportswoman, Sportsman of the Year

July 25, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Track and field star Kaysee Pilgrim has been named UNLV Sportswoman of the Year and Rebel soccer standout Danny Musovski has been named Sportsman of the Year for the 2015-16 season, UNLV Athletics announced Monday.

Pilgrim, a junior transfer from Pima Community College, capped her fine season by finishing 11th overall at both the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump. Her placement at the latter competition earned her USTFCCCA Second Team All-America Team honors.

The Phoenix native quickly made a name for herself in her first appearance with the Scarlet & Gray with a record-setting indoor performance (5-10.75/1.80m) at Northern Arizona's Friday Night Duals in January. Pilgrim one-upped herself and again rewrote the program's record book at the New Mexico Classic with a measurement of 6-0 (1.83m). That mark was tops in the Mountain West and it tied for the 14th-best in the nation.

In just her third outdoor meet she moved atop the program's performance list with a jump of 6-0.75 (1.85m) at the Mt. SAC Relays in April. That distance ranked first in the conference and sixth best nationally.

Overall, she finished seventh or better in 10 meets this year, and that included four first-place finishes.

Musovski is the second consecutive player from the men's soccer team to be named UNLV Sportsman of the Year, following Salvador Bernal for the 2014-15. And just like Bernal, Musovski ended the season with All-America honors, as the sophomore capped one of the top seasons ever by a Rebel with second-team All-America nod from the NSCAA, as well as third team honors from College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer (Best XI).

The Las Vegas native was the 2015 WAC Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the NSCAA All-West Region and the All-WAC First Team. The awards capped a season in which he finished with 14 goals in his second year. That was not only the most by a Rebel since 1990, it also tied him for ninth-best in a season in school history and ranked him sixth in the nation. He also paced the WAC in regular-season total points with 34, which tied for fourth-highest in the nation.

Musovski notched seven game-winning goals in 2015, which tied for the second-highest mark in the nation. Five of those came in one-goal victories, including three in the final five minutes of the contest. He also received WAC Player of the Week honors in the final week of the regular season after a multi-goal game that clinched the Rebels' spot in the league tournament.

The UNLV Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards are presented annually to the athletics department's top male and female athletes, taking only athletic performance during the past year into account. Both Pilgrim and Musovski will be honored for their accomplishments at a UNLV football game this fall.
