Golden Goal Lifts Rebels to 2OT Victory

Sept. 18, 2016

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - On a hot afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field it took just over 101 minutes for UNLV women's soccer to put away Cal State Fullerton on a golden penalty kick goal in double overtime. After the Rebels and Titans went scoreless during regulation and the first overtime period, midfielder Sophie Cortes drew a penalty on a Titan defender in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick goal by Cortes in the 101st minute, giving UNLV its seventh win on the season.

The non-conference finale was not an easy one as both teams battled in the heat, with each producing multiple scoring threats throughout the game, but neither finding the net through the first 90 minutes of regulation and the first 10 minutes of the extra frame. The Rebels' best chance in regulation came in the 41st minute when forward Brittney Gideon took a quick touch to the left past the goalie in the box, but couldn't get the score after misfiring into the side of the net. Cortes almost ended the game at the end of the first overtime period, launching the ball towards the goal from 22 yards out, but just barely missing the score as the ball ricocheted off the top crossbar. After the near goal, it was fitting Cortes was the hero in the second extra frame.

With the win, the Rebels were able to return the favor from last year's 1-0 loss in Fullerton, after a late goal gave the Titans a win at home in 2015.

Overall, the Rebels outshot the Titans 22-15, including 5-2 during the extra time.

Junior keeper Jessie Clark made her second start in goal for UNLV in 2016 and was again solid in the net as she collected four saves and thwarted several attacks by Cal State Fullerton. With the exception of the frantic last five minutes of Friday night's 3-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield, Clark has gone 186 minutes in two games without allowing a goal, helping the Rebels to their second shutout of the season.

The victory wrapped up an exciting alumni weekend for UNLV as they welcomed several former players back to campus, raised money to support and bring awareness to pediatric cancer and capped it all with two wins to finish its non-conference slate 7-2 overall. The Rebels' home stand continues on Friday, Sept. 23 at Peter Johann Memorial Field with a 7 p.m. matchup against conference foe San Jose State, followed by a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday, Sept. 25 against Fresno State.
