Rebels Dominate Bulldogs To Earn First Conference Win

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer wrapped up a four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field with a 4-1 win over conference-foe Fresno State. The Rebels bounced back after a frustrating 2-1 loss to San Jose State on Friday night in a game they out-shot the Spartans 21-7, but couldn't find the back of the net. That wasn't a problem on Sunday as UNLV netted three first-half goals and added an insurance goal in the final seconds of the game to secure its first Mountain West win.

The first Rebel goal came right at the 13 minute mark after a beautiful play by redshirt senior Susie Bernal, who pushed the ball up the right side, made a nifty cutback with the ball and then sent the perfect cross into the box. Fellow senior Lily Sender, the team's leading scorer in 2016, was there to finish the cross into the net for her sixth goal of the season. It was also Bernal's fifth assist of the season, giving her 17 in her UNLV career -- now just three shy of breaking the career mark of 19 held by former Rebel Katie Carney (2004-07).

The next two goals came courtesy of freshman Katie Ballou. The first came on a penalty kick in the 24th minute after the Bulldogs were called for a hand ball in the box. Ballou lined up to take the kick and buried it in the net, but the Rebels were called for charging the box too early and Ballou had to line up to take a second shot, which she had no problem pushing past the goalie the second time around. In the 39th minute, Fresno State was called for a foul on the left side of box from 24 yards out and Ballou was again called upon to take the free kick. Aiming for a cross, Ballou's foot had other plans as her booming kick went right at the goal and slipped through the keepers hands to put the Rebels up 3-0 in the first half. The scores were the first-year player's third and fourth goals of the season, respectively. Ballou had to leave the game in the second half after an injury and the Rebels are hoping they can get her back on the field on the road next weekend.

While Fresno State tried to mount a comeback, the Rebel defense and junior keeper Jordan Sallee thwarted several attacks by the Bulldogs. The visitors did manage to find the net once, in the 79th minute, when Sydni Lunt fired a shot from 12 yards out that deflected right to the foot of Fresno State's leading scorer Myra Delgadillo, who found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Sallee, who started for UNLV after Jessie Clark had started the previous three matches, registered four huge saves on the day to keep the Bulldogs from closing in on the lead.

The Rebels added an insurance goal at the 89:58 mark after Sophie Cortes drew a foul in the box for the second-straight week. While it wasn't the game-winner this time around, Cortes calmly delivered the kick to provide the final margin of 4-1.

The team now has 27 goals on the season after having 30 all of last year -- with nine regular season games left to play -- while its 25 assists are just seven shy of the single-season record of 32 set in 2015.

UNLV (8-3-0, 1-1-0) heads out on the road for the second weekend of conference play with a Friday match at Wyoming and a Sunday contest at Colorado State. Game times are set for 3 p.m. PT and 12 p.m. PT, respectively.
