LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Finishing play Friday under the lights in the cool post-rain air, UNLV senior Carol Yang quickly heated up the new year for the Rebels by stunning 14th-ranked Meible Chi of Duke in the first round of action at the 15th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

After rare desert storms delayed the start time of the tournament four hours, Yang, ranked 48th in the nation, outlasted the fifth-seeded Chi in two tiebreakers, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 (11-9) to improve to 11-3 on the season and move into the second round of the top flight at the elite event. She will now face Laura Gulbe of Pepperdine in the first of two rounds of singles scheduled for Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Yang also teamed with freshman newcomer En-Pei Huang in doubles for a 6-3 victory over UCLA's Terri Fleming and Alain Miller as part of the top flight.

The host Rebels also picked up a doubles victory in Flight Two, as Paola Artiga and Anna Bogoslavets paired up to down Paulette Wolak and Liz Yao of Stanford 6-1.

Individual competitors representing teams that include all of the top five and seven of the top 25 from the season's initial ITA national rankings are on hand for the event, which is scheduled to run through Sunday.

Action gets underway Saturday with doubles at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
