Lotulelei, McTyer Prepping For All-Star Game Appearance

Jan. 19, 2017

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former UNLV linebacker Tau Lotulelei (low-2-LAY-LAY) and defensive back Torry McTyer are currently in Carson, California, preparing to play in this weekend's NFLPA Collegiate bowl.

The Rebel duo is among 110 draft-eligible players who will face off Saturday at StubHub Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. PT and the game will be televised live on FS1.

The two Rebels are members of the National Team, which is being coached by former NFL head man Mike Martz. The American Team head coach this year is Jim Zorn.

Lotulelei (Kiheki, HI/Maui HS) and McTyer (Los Angeles, CA/Cathedral HS) are the third and fourth UNLV products to take part in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, following defensive lineman B.J. Bell in 2011 and quarterback Caleb Herring in 2013.

Lotulelei, who became the first Rebel to earn first team All-MW honors since his older brother John did it in 2012, had a career-best season while leading the squad with 117 total tackles, which was the most by a Rebel since John Lotulelei logged 120 four years ago.

Through the end of the regular season, Lotulelei's 16.5 tackles-for-loss led the MW and his 9.8 tackles per game ranked 16th in the nation. He added 3.5 quarterback sacks, three pass breakups and 1 forced fumble on the year. The four-year letterman was named the league's defensive player of the week on October 19 after his forced fumble helped UNLV win at Hawai'i. Lotulelei finished his Rebel career ranked fifth in tackles with 318.

McTyer was honorable mention All-MW in 2016. He ranked second in the conference with 12 pass breakups and tied for 10th in the nation with 1.4 passes defended per game. He also ranked fifth in the league with three interceptions to go with 49 total tackles. McTyer was named MW Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 14 after grabbing two picks against Wyoming.
