LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball swept a doubleheader in the second day of the DeMarini Desert Classic on Friday night at Eller Media Stadium, defeating Weber State (0-6-1) 6-5 and UTEP (0-6) 7-3. The Rebels record goes to 6-2 after both wins.
Weber State jumped out to a early 2-0 lead to begin day two of the DeMarini Classic. The Wildcats collected three hits benefitting from a fielding error to claim a lead.
UNLV's bats were quiet in the second and third inning, but Kiley Harrison's RBI single up the middle tied it up, which brought home Jamie Hatch. Myranda Bueno answered back with an RBI single of her own up the middle bringing home Breana Burke and Alyssa Navarro to take the lead 4-2.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth after an error allowed a Wildcat batter to reach first with nobody on and two outs.
Charlie Masterson started the game in the circle for the Scarlet & Gray allowing two runs (one earned), five hits with two strikeouts in 2+ innings. Burke relieved Masterson in the third inning and allowed no hits through three innings, however, she allowed her first two hits of the game, followed by Wildcat second baseman McKinle Brinkerhoff to triple down the right field line tying it up at four.
Morgan Ettinger came in the seventh and surrendered the go-ahead run by way of a double down the right field line. Weber State scored the go-ahead run in the seventh came off an RBI single with a runner on third.
The home half of the seventh was what the Scarlet & Gray needed, as Brianna Gatlin laced one right back at the pitcher for a single. On the first pitch for Janine Petmecky, she belted one to left-center for a two-run homer in walk-off fashion for a 6-5 victory. Morgan Ettinger moved to 4-0 pitching one inning giving up three hits, one run and striking out one.
UTEP jumped to an early 1-0 lead in UNLV's second game of the night with an RBI single off Ettinger, however, UNLV answered right back with the bases loaded as Petmecky recorded the RBI on the fielder's choice.
After a couple of RBI singles for both the Rebels and the Miners in the second inning, UTEP struck back with another RBI single in the third. The home half of the fourth was what the Scarlet & Gray was looking for. Justine Federe drove in Brooke Stover from third with an RBI single and with a two runners on later, Karly Bunderson bunted it right in front of the catcher, reaching base on the throwing error, which allowed Bueno to score. Two more runners reached base in the fifth, and head coach Lisa Dodd chose to put in Alysaa Navaro to pinch-hit. She delivered blasting a three-run homer down the left field line giving the Rebels a 8-4 cushion, which is all the Rebels needed for the win.
Morgan Ettinger (5-0) picked up back-to-back wins in the day-night doubleheader, pitching a complete game giving up eight hits, four runs (one earned), one walk and striking out six.
The Rebels return to action in the DeMarini Desert Classic tomorrow vs. Memphis at 4:45 p.m.
