Gonzalez, Johnson Earn Conference Awards

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior Dakota Gonzalez has been named to the Mountain West All-Conference Team, while classmate Brooke Johnson was selected to the All-Defensive team and picked up Honorable Mention All-MW honors as well, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Gonzalez was recognized after picking up Honorable Mention honors in her first year as a Lady Rebel in 2015-16. She led the Lady Rebels in scoring for the second straight year with 13.3 ppg, while her 13.6 points in league play tied for ninth overall. The native of Pocatello, Idaho, reached double-figures in a team-high 13 league games, and was the only Lady Rebel to start all 18 contests. She posted a pair of double-doubles in league play, and earned her first career MW Player of the Week honor, while also being named College Sports Madness High Mid-Major Player of the Week, after averaging 27 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in a pair of wins over Nevada, Reno and at San Jose State. One of the toughest players on the squad, she leads the league in overall minutes played with 36.1 per game, which ranks her 50th in the nation as well.
Johnson, from Hanford, Calif., receives conference honors for the first time in her career. She is leading the Mountain West in steals for the second straight season, finishing the regular season with 2.8 per game, while her overall average of 2.5 is the 41st best in the nation. Johnson is one of the top all-around players in the conference, as she averaged 12 points (14th) while adding 3.8 apg (7th), and shooting 75.4% (12th) from the free throw line in league play. She reached double-figures in 10 games, including a pair of 20+ point performances.
The Lady Rebels finished the regular season at 21-9 and tied for third with a 12-6 record in league play. The 12 MW wins is a new school record, while the the Lady Rebels have posted their first 20-win season since 2011-12. UNLV, the third seed in the 2017 MW Championships, opens play in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 8:30 pm against either sixth seed Utah State or 11th seed Air Force in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
