Sept. 15, 2017 @unlvwsoccer | 2017 Schedule | Box Score | Season StatisticsBAKERSFIELD, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer captured its third consecutive road win Friday night at CSU Bakersfield thanks to a pair of goals by senior midfielder Sophie Cortes. The 2-1 victory over the Roadrunners improved the Rebels' record to 7-1 on the season - a program-best mark through the first eight games.
Cortes now has six goals on the year, two more than she had all of last year, and 16 points to lead the Rebels in both categories. Sophomore
Michaela Morris registered assists on both of Cortes' goals while junior
Caitlyn Kreutz was part of a double assist on Cortes' first goal in the 51st minute.
THE TURNING POINT: After CSU Bakersfield tied the game at one on a penalty kick in the 68th minute via a questionable UNLV foul in the box, the Rebels didn't get discouraged. Instead, they kept attacking and after a long Roadrunner injury delay due to cramps, UNLV had a throw in the CSUB third of the field. Morris trapped the ball off the throw in, battled with the defender and poked the ball toward the goal. She ran onto it and sent the ball to a streaking Cortes, who was able to bury it in the back of the net from 10 yards out for the 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV was out-shot for just the third time this season, but managed to win its first game of the year when that is the case. The Roadrunners out-shot the Rebels 19-16, the most shots the Scarlet and Gray have given up this year, but ultimately it didn't matter.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Senior
Sophie Cortes had her second multi-goal game of the year and now has a team-leading six total through eight games - two more than she had all of last year.
QUOTABLE:
"I'm very happy with the result. It's always a bit tougher to find wins on the road. Credit to Bakersfield who came out ready to play and made things tough on us, especially in the first 25 minutes of the game." -Head Coach Chris Shaw
