Lady Rebels Power Over Spartans 79-60

UNLV took full advantage of its superior height in the post on Wednesday night, as the Lady Rebels kept pounding the ball inside all night long on the way to a 79-60 victory over San Jose State in Mountain West women's basketball action from the Cox Pavilion Wednesday night. With the win in their conference home opener, the Lady Rebels improved to 6-7 overall, 1-1 in league play, while SJSU dropped to 4-10, 1-2 in the MW.

Katie Powell and Paris Strawther both posted double-doubles in the victory for UNLV, who led 21-16 after the first quarter and then took control after scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the second quarter for a 32-18 advantage at the 4:35 mark of the half. SJSU came no closer then 11 points the rest of the way, the last time at 48-37 with 2:58 to play in the third quarter. The Lady Rebels sealed the game by scoring the final eight points of the quarter and the first four of the fourth quarter. That 12-0 run put UNLV ahead 60-37, and UNLV would lead by as high as 25 on three occasions before closing out with the 19-point victory.

THE TURNING POINT: The Spartans were held to just one made field goal from the 2:26 mark of the first quarter (14-12 UNLV lead) to the 4:23 mark of the second quarter. During that stretch, they went 1-9 from the floor, and the Lady Rebels took advantage to open up a 14-point lead.

LADY REBEL OF THE GAME: Junior Katie Powell recorded her team-high seventh double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and also added a career-high four assists.



STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV outscored the Spartans 50-18 on points in the paint, and also held a 55-30 rebounding advantage.

LADY REBEL NOTES:
* Paris Strawther posted her first double-double of the season with a career-high tying 18 points along with 11 rebounds.
* Four players finished in double-figures, as Alyssa Anderson posted 10 points and seven rebounds, while Brooke Johnson added 16 points and six assists.
* Johnson tied the school record for free throw percentage in a game by hitting all 10 of her attempts (100%).
* UNLV won despite making only one total three-point field goal, out of 11 attempts (9.1%).
* The Lady Rebels posted a season-high 22 assists, on 28 made field goals.
* Off the bench, sophomore forward Rodjanae Wade recorded nine points and eight rebounds, while freshman center Krista Jackman registered new career-highs in minutes (10), points (eight) and rebounds (three).
