Utah State Impresses In Downing Rebels

Box Score LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) – Surging Utah State (5-1/2-0) continued to build its case as the Mountain West's best team with a 59-28 victory over UNLV (2-4/0-2) on a mostly gloomy and cold Saturday at Maverik Stadium.

The Aggies won their fifth straight while the Rebels lost their third consecutive outing despite jumping out to 7-0 lead on a one-yard Lexington Thomas touchdown in the first quarter. USU, however, soon scored 28 points in a span of less than six minutes to build a 42-7 halftime lead.

Thomas, who came in averaging 100 yards per game, had 51 yards on 12 carries when he was knocked out of the game with an injury in the first series of the second half.

Max Gilliam, making his second start after the loss of quarterback Armani Rogers to injury, completed 18 of 36 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns despite being sacked seven times and picked off once.

Rebel safety Javin White led the way defensively with 10 total tackles, including 1.5 TFL.

STAT OF THE GAME:
12 different Utah State players made at least one reception as Aggie QB Jordan Love tied a school record with five touchdown passes.

REBEL OF THE GAME:
True freshman Tyleek Collins had a breakout game with 139 yards on four receptions, including a 79-yard catch and score. He also rushed twice for 20 yards.

QUOTABLE:
"The guys came out and did what we asked them to do - they played fiery offensively and defensively … You're down big in the second half, but I thought the guys came out and played with some energy, so that was good to see. There were just too many mistakes throughout the course of the game."
-UNLV Head Coach Tony Sanchez

REBEL NOTES:
-Tyleek Collins' 139 yards receiving marked the first 100-yard receiving game for a Rebel since Darren Woods Jr. went for 114 yards at New Mexico in Game 11 of 2017
-UNLV made its first appearance in Logan since 2014
-USU blocked a Hayes Hicken punt attempt and ran it into the end zone to mark the first punt return for a score by a Rebel opponent since a game at Utah in 2004
-The Aggies improved to 17-7 vs. UNLV all-time in what was their fifth straight victory in the series
-Despite missing half the game because of injury, Lexington Thomas became only the third Rebel in history to reach the 3,000-yard career rushing mark. The senior now has 3,040 and joins Tim Cornett (3,733 from 2010-13) and Mike Thomas (3,149 from 1973-74)
-Thomas' first-quarter touchdown gave him 34 for his career, which is just three away from Mike Thomas' school record set more than four decades ago

NEXT FOR THE REBELS:
