Rebels See Drought in San Jose Continue

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Freshman wide receiver Tyleek Collins' four touchdowns were not enough to keep UNLV (2-6/0-4) from losing its fifth straight game, 50-37 to San Jose State (1-7/1-3) at CEFCU Stadium Saturday. The Rebels have also lost five straight road trips against the Spartans.

Collins finished with 170 yards on nine catches and became just the fourth Rebel – and first rookie – to find the end zone four times via the pass. Quarterback Max Gilliam threw all four, which gave him 12 in the last four games since taking over for injured starter Armani Rogers. The sophomore also threw a career-high three interceptions, however, one of which was returned 50 yards for a touchdown.

Despite scoring first, UNLV fell behind 17-7 before Gilliam found Collins for a 75-yard score and then for a four-yard shovel pass to give the Rebels a 21-17 lead. SJSU, however, scored the next 21 points in the game to pull away.

THE TURNING POINT:
UNLV had just captured all momentum late in the second quarter and looked ready to enjoy a halftime lead before the hosts traveled 74 yards in a minute's time to recapture the advantage with just 34 seconds left.

STAT OF THE GAME:
UNLV star running back Lexington Thomas netted just 61 yards on the ground on 19 carries.

REBEL OF THE GAME:
Tyleek Collins dazzled onlookers with his four touchdowns (75 yards, 46 yards, and twice from four yards), joining Devante Davis (2013), Henry Bailey (1994) and Nate Hawkins (1971) with four TD receptions in a game by a Rebel. His 170 yards were the 21st-most in a game by any UNLV receiver.

QUOTABLE:
"Extremely disappointed with the outcome of the game. We moved the ball at times offensively … but we made some critical errors. Defensively, we struggled in the back end again. We're going to keep our chin up and do the best we can getting on home and staying positive and we've got to wake up tomorrow morning and get back to work. We've got four games left, so we're just going to keep driving and going."
-UNLV Head Coach Tony Sanchez

REBEL NOTES:
-UNLV has not won a game in San Jose since 1993 when both teams were members of the Big West Conference.
-Max GIlliam's 387 yards passing were the 14th-most in a game by a Rebel and the most since Blake Decker's 397 vs. Northern Illinois in 2014.
-Gilliam also finished with a career-high 56 yards rushing, including his first touchdown on the ground as a Rebel. His previous rushing high in a game was four yards.
-UNLV's defense, after going three games without a single sack, notched three vs. SJSU to give the Rebels 14 on the year, which is three more than all of last season.
-Senior safety Dalton Baker led the team with 10 total tackles and grabbed his first career interception. It marked the team's second pick of the season.
