LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball program has signed four student-athletes – Shelby Capllonch, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira – who will enroll at the University and be eligible to play for the Rebels beginning with the 2019 season, head coach
Dawn Sullivan announced.
The class features a pair of libero/defensive specialists (Garcia and Oliveira), one middle blocker (Freeman) and one outside hitter (Capllonch). Both Garcia and Freeman hail from California, while Capllonch and Oliveira are native to Hawaii.
"I am incredibly excited to welcome this class to the Rebel family," said head coach
Dawn Sullivan. "They will add a great deal of ball control as well as power at the net allowing us to continue to raise the standard in our gym and take this program to another level."
Capllonch attends Damien Memorial School in Honolulu, and lettered four years for the Monarchs volleyball team. The 5-8 outside hitter guided the Monarchs to three straight third-place finishes at the HHSAA Division II State Tournament. The team registered a combined four-year overall record of 48-23, which included a 16-3 showing during her senior campaign. She earned 2018 Interscholastic League of Honolulu D2 Player of the Year honors after being named to a first team representative from 2015-17. She was also a four-year ILH D2 All-Tournament Team representative.
Freeman, who stands 6-2, lettered two years for the Rancho Bernardo High School volleyball team after first taking up the sport as a sophomore. In two years at RBHS, she helped the Broncos to a total of 42 wins; 25 of which came during the 2017 campaign that saw the Broncos advance to the championship match of the CIF State Division IV playoffs. The 2017 squad had also advanced to the semifinals of the CIF San Diego Section Division II Tournament. During her senior season, Freeman was chosen a player to watch by the San Diego Union-Tribune, served as a team captain, led the team in kills, and claimed the Best Offensive Player of the Year Award.
Garcia, who is 5-6, lettered three years in volleyball at East Lake High School in Chula Vista, California. She helped the Titans to a pair of Metro Mesa League titles in 2016 and '18. This past year, the team went 22-19 and concluded its season in the CIF State Division II playoffs after it advanced to the semifinals of the CIF San Diego Section Division I Tournament. She was selected the squad's libero of the year.
Oliveira, who is 5-6, led the Kamehameha Schools (Kap
ālama campus) Warriors to three straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu DI titles as well as three appearances in the state title game with one championship in 2017. This year's squad went 14-2, as she was named to the ILH DI All-Star Second Team
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV hits the road to close out the regular season with a pair of contests in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The Rebels will travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, to face Colorado State Thursday and then trek to Laramie, Wyoming, for a bout Saturday. Both affairs are slated for 7:00 pm MT (6:00 pm PT) first serves.
