SACRAMENTO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track & field's Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete ran a personal-best time of 2:01.14 to earn a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in two weeks (June 6-9). Wilson-Perteete's time was second only to Oregon's Sabrina Southerland's 2:00.72 at the NCAA West Preliminary at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. Additionally, those two times are the fastest by NCAA student-athletes this season.
Southerland and Wilson-Perteete entered the meet with the second- and fifth-fastest times in not only the West Region, but also in the NCAA.
Wilson-Perteete's teammate Jasmyne Graham clocked a time of 13.45, the 16th-fastest time, in the first round of 100m hurdles to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals at 7:20 pm. Graham will also run a leg of the 4x100m relay alongside Najia Hudspeth, Kaysha Love and Destiny Smith-Barnett at 6:15 pm.
Love, Wilson-Perteete and the Hudspeth twins (Najia and Nylia) will close out UNLV's participation at the West Preliminary with the 4x400m relay at 9:45 pm.
The West Preliminary serves as the first and second rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Each individual event will have 48 participants, while the relays will consist of 24 teams, with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships.
REBEL NOTES:
- Wilson-Perteete's improved her time in UNLV's all-time performance list, but still ranks second.
- Wilson-Perteete advanced to the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800m and earned USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honors.
- In the 100m, Smith-Barnett finished 14th (11.34).
- In the 200m, Najia Hudspeth finished 37th (24.19).
